CIR does not operate in Great Britain and, until quite recently, there seemed to be little enthusiasm for it. Odd really, given that democracy has been evolving in GB since Magna Carta in 1215. But all things either evolve or perish and the Westminster system continues to change with the times. In recent years there has been something of a reaction against party politics with its increase in influence at the expenseof the proper working of parliament. Two developments in particular should be mentioned. The recent creation of I&R~GB (Citizens' initiative and referendum) – an admirable organization with aims exactly the same as CIR Australia. Like us, I&R~GB is careful not to be associated with any political party or any political cause. It seeks to improve the democratic process – and that is all. The web site for I&R~GB can be seen at www.iniref.org Another interesting development is the creation of Jury Team. This is a rather larger and perhaps more ambitious venture which seeks to support independent candidates at all levels of government throughout Great Britain. Their slogan, if we may be forgiven for using the word, is ‘Politics Without Parties’. The Jury team strongly supports the introduction of CIR. Please see the Jury Team web site at www.juryteam.org
